The Peter and Paul Cathedral
is located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress.
In 1703 tsar Peter the Great ordered to build this fortress on barren land,
which he recently conquered from the Swedes, as starting point for Russia's new capital.
He forbade the building of stone edifices outside Saint Petersburg
so that all the stonemasons could participate in the construction of the new city.
